Q&A
What is Genital Herpies?
Genital Herpies is a highly common, lifetime infection which is generally transmitted through sexual contact.
The symptoms of Genital Herpies can vary significantly depending on whether a person is experiencing their first or one of many Genital Herpies outbreaks.
A generally recognised symptom of Genital Herpies is the appearance of small and some-what painful blisters on the skin. Herpies can appear on the lips, genitals or on other parts of your body.
There are two types of the herpies simplex virus - herpies type 1 and herpies type 2. Herpies type 1 is the virus that causes cold sores on the lips or facial area which is often transmitted during childhood through kissing and can also be transmitted to the genitals through direct skin contact, often via oral sex. The herpies type 2 virus is responsible for the majority of genital herpies and is commonly transmitted through sexual contact with your partner.
How do you know if you have genital herpies?
Most of the people who have Genital Herpies do not show symptoms what so ever or even realise that they have come into contact with someone with Genital Herpies and may only notice the symptoms at a later date.
For others, the initial symptoms of genital herpies may show up from 2days to 3 weeks after coming into contact with someone with the herpies virus.
This first outbreak of genital herpies will usually be the most severe because your immune system has not had time to develop protective antibodies which means that the virus can multiply rapidly.
Do I need to tell my partner I have herpies?
Yes you do because if you don’t I will come and hunt you down for helping the herpies virus spread more than it is currently doing.
It is extremely important to discuss the fact that you have genital herpies with your partner or bit on the side before having sex. Talking about Genital Herpies may be difficult at first, but please remember that open discussion is the best way to help you decide how to best minimise the risks of infection for your partner.
Let your partner know that you have a history of genital herpies and that there may be times when you cant have sex because your thinking about them catching genital herpies.
Will I get genital herpies again?
After your first herpies outbreak you might get it again because the virus stays in your body for life. Some people do not have any further outbreaks or symptoms of herpies, however, the symptoms of genital herpies do reoccur in some people, although a second or third outbreak is not usually as severe as the first outbreak of genital herpies.
